Signs of a Burst Pipe Inside Your Wall

Pipes inside walls can leak for days before you notice. Here's how to spot the warning signs early.

The Danger of Hidden Pipe Leaks

A pipe that bursts in plain view is obvious. A pipe leaking inside a wall can cause thousands of dollars in damage before you even notice.

Know these warning signs.

Sign #1: Unexplained Water Bill Increase

Your water bill provides the first clue of many hidden leaks.

Compare to the same month last year. A 20%+ increase without explanation suggests a leak.

Do the meter test:

  1. Turn off all water in the house
  2. Check your water meter
  3. Wait 2 hours (don't use any water)
  4. Check the meter again

If the reading changed, water went somewhere — probably through a leak.

Sign #2: Sound of Running Water

Hear water flowing when nothing is on? Listen carefully at night when it's quiet.

What to listen for:

  • Hissing behind walls
  • Dripping inside walls
  • Flowing water sound without explanation

Put your ear to walls in different rooms. The sound may help locate the leak.

Sign #3: Water Stains on Walls or Ceilings

New stains: Brown or yellowish spots appearing on drywall, especially:

  • Below bathroom/kitchen areas
  • On ceilings below second floors
  • On basement walls

Old stains: Darker, possibly with mineral deposits at edges

Active vs. old: Touch the stain. Wet = active leak. Dry = old leak (but may still be ongoing intermittently).

Sign #4: Warping, Bubbling, or Bulging Walls

Water saturates drywall, causing:

  • Bubbling or peeling paint
  • Warped drywall (curves outward)
  • Soft spots when you press the wall
  • Drywall crumbling or flaking

These signs often appear before visible water stains.

Sign #5: Mold or Mildew Smell

That musty, earthy smell = mold growth from hidden moisture.

Where to smell: Closets against exterior walls, under sinks, anywhere ventilation is poor.

Mold can grow within 24-48 hours of water exposure, so this smell often indicates an ongoing leak.

Sign #6: Visible Mold Growth

Mold appearing on walls with no obvious moisture source = likely hidden leak.

Check:

  • Corners of rooms
  • Along baseboards
  • Around windows
  • Behind furniture against walls

Any mold on interior walls (not exterior/basement) suggests a plumbing leak.

Sign #7: Decreased Water Pressure

A significant leak diverts water before it reaches fixtures.

Signs:

  • Sudden pressure drop throughout house
  • Pressure loss to specific fixtures
  • Water supply feels "weak"

Combined with other signs here, low pressure strongly suggests a leak.

Sign #8: Foundation Cracks or Shifting

For slab foundations, a leaking pipe underneath can:

  • Erode supporting soil
  • Cause foundation shifting
  • Create new cracks
  • Make doors stick

Slab leaks are especially serious — call a professional immediately.

What to Do If You Suspect a Hidden Leak

Step 1: Confirm It

Do the water meter test. If water is flowing with everything off, you have a leak.

Step 2: Check Accessible Areas

Look under sinks, around water heater, behind toilets. Sometimes the "hidden" leak is visible if you look.

Step 3: Don't Start Cutting Walls

Before opening up walls, call a professional. Leak detection equipment can pinpoint the location without unnecessary damage.

Step 4: Shut Off Water If Severe

If you see active water damage spreading, shut off the main water until a plumber arrives.

Professional Leak Detection

Professionals use:

  • Acoustic listening devices — hear water flowing behind walls
  • Thermal imaging — see temperature differences from water
  • Moisture meters — measure saturation levels
  • Pressure testing — isolate and test sections

These tools find leaks with minimal wall damage.
